Fast food outlets found to be near to many Birmingham schools

New data released by the Birmingham Mail indicates that a large number of schools in the city are located close to a McDonald’s restaurant.

The recent statistics show that 56 schools are within half a mile of the popular fast food outlets.

The Food Standard Agency’s website was used to compare the locations of McDonald’s outlets and school addresses, with 8% of schools being within a ten-minute walk. The place with the highest percentage of schools close to the fast food chain was Sandwell, with 13% being half a mile away or less.

The other areas implicated were Solihull, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall, and Birmingham. The schools that were located closest to a McDonald’s were Bishop Challoner RC Secondary School in Kings Heath and Highters Heath Nursery School in Yardley Wood, both within 0.1 miles.

Birmingham City Council is taking action to fight against rising child obesity levels in the city, as data revealed that around 50 children aged 11 have already reached 16 stone. A quarter of Year 6 children are classed as officially obese, according to medical experts in the city.

In fact, the council refused planning permission to almost half of all new takeaways wanting to open in the area between March 2012 and May 2014.

Schools across the UK are taking action against obesity by encouraging business enterprise ideas for kids. Merseyside schools are working with children who have opened their own healthy tuckshops as part of the drive to encourage nutritious eating.
