Five Best Fruits for the Gym Enthusiast

If you are into fitness, you will already know that what you eat is extremely important. Exercise will only take you so far. If you want to be able to gain muscle and have the energy you need to exercise efficiently, you need to watch what you eat.

As you know, fruit is extremely healthy, with all types being potentially good for you. However, some fruits provide more benefits for the gym enthusiast than others.

Bananas

If you are looking for a way to give your body the fibre and vitamins it needs, you cannot go wrong with a banana. For those who are trying to bulk up, bananas are a great fruit. They are quite high in calories, but it is all good calories.

Importantly, bananas contain high levels of potassium. This mineral is essential for your muscles. Without enough of it, you will suffer from muscle cramps and be unable to exercise.

Grapefruit

If you are trying to burn fat, and get better definition, you really should eat at least half a grapefruit every day. Doing so will give your metabolism a much needed boost.

What you eat after the gym has a big impact on how much you will get out of that exercise session. Your body has to be able to go into repair mode as quickly as possible to start building muscle. The longer you spend in recovery mode, the less effective your workout will have been.

Grapes have a high glycemic index. This means that they can be used to restore your body’s glycogen levels, which will have been depleted during exercise. The quicker you restore glycogen levels, the faster your body goes into repair mode.

Cherries

One problem that those who exercise hard can have is inflammation. In the gym, the body will have often been worked much harder than is normal. This can lead to inflammation around the joints, which is why you ache so much after a gym session.

Cherries help to tackle this inflammation. You only need a handful to reduce swelling, but make sure that you only eat fresh ones. Most preserved cherries have sugar added, which counteracts the benefit of the fruit.

Dark berries

All dark berries, such as blueberries and strawberries, have a very beneficial impact on health, as they contain lots of antioxidants. If you want to get fitter and build muscle, your body must be as free of toxins as possible, so you need plenty of antioxidant rich foods like berries.

Everyone needs fruit

Some weight trainers will not eat fruit at all. They try to keep their blood sugar as low as possible to encourage the production of growth hormones.

This sounds logical, but it is in fact counter-productive. This is because you need insulin to carry nutrients to your muscles. Without these nutrients, muscle growth slows.

The most natural way to generate insulin is to eat a little fruit. You just have to eat it at the right time. Many professionals consume their fruit 45 minutes before they workout or immediately after finishing their workout. Eaten this way, fruit is great for gym goers.
